By the time the holidays arrive, the lavender fields have had their big moment. The harvest is in, the distilling is finished, and Milton and I are busy getting lavender gifts ready to leave the farm.
Even on a lavender farm, December comes with a to-do list.
One of my favorite things about growing lavender is knowing that a little of what starts here ends up in your everyday life: beside your bed, tucked into your travel bag, or within reach after you’ve washed what feels like every dish you own.
I love that connection between our farm and your home. Here are six ways to bring a little of that lavender comfort into the busy weeks ahead.
1. Give your favorite scent a little room
Between the tree, something baking, and a candle someone just lit, a holiday house can have quite a lot going on in the fragrance department.
If lavender is your favorite, choose a spot where you can enjoy it on its own. A few drops of our Lavender Essential Oil on a ceramic diffuser beside your favorite chair or on your bedside table can be lovely.
You don’t have to scent the whole house. Sometimes it’s nice to have one place that smells just the way you like it.
2. Look after the hands doing all that work
Working on the farm gives me an appreciation for hardworking hands. So does a holiday afternoon of chopping vegetables, washing dishes, and trying to find the end of the tape.
Keep a tin of our Lavender Salve somewhere you’ll remember to use it. After washing and drying your hands, work a little into dry knuckles and cuticles.
It’s a small comfort for hands that have been doing a lot for everyone else.
3. Take your break outside
Being outdoors is a big part of life on the farm. There’s always something to notice, even when the lavender isn’t blooming: the light across the fields, the air, or what the animals are up to.
During a busy day indoors, try taking your cup outside for a few minutes. Look at whatever’s growing nearby. Notice the sky.
There’s no need to turn it into a proper walk. Standing on the doorstep in your slippers counts.
4. Take a little lavender with you
If you’re packing for the holidays, tuck a lavender sachet among the clothes in your suitcase. It’s a lovely way to bring a familiar scent along, especially when you’re sleeping somewhere new.
Keep a lavender oil roller in your carry-on or purse, too, for moments when you could use a breather: a flight delay, a long day on the road, or a little more extended-family togetherness than you’re used to.
Roll a little onto your wrists, enjoy the fragrance, and take a few slow breaths. Sometimes a familiar comfort and a minute to yourself are very welcome travel companions.
5. Let the note be part of the gift
We spend a lot of time thinking about lavender gifts this time of year. The part only you can add is why you chose one for that particular person.
“For your bedside table.”
“For after your very full house gets quiet again.”
“Because you loved visiting the farm.”
A few words in your own voice can be the nicest part of opening a gift.
And if we’re shipping lavender gifts directly to your friends and family, we’re happy to include a handwritten, personalized note. Tell us what you’d like it to say, and we’ll tuck it in with your gift.
It’s one of the ways we can help something sent from our farm feel like it came from you.
6. Keep a little lavender for the end of the day
There’s something especially lovely about getting into your own bed after a day with a lot of people, a lot of cooking, or a lot of miles.
A light mist of our Lavender Linen & Room Spray on your bedding brings the fresh, true-lavender scent of our estate-distilled essential oil into that moment.
Put the bottle where you’ll remember it. Let the lavender be something you enjoy regularly, including on the evenings when the dishes are still in the sink.
That’s what “Calm, rooted in everyday life” means to us. Lavender grown here on the farm, finding its way into the little moments that make your day feel good.
I hope there’s a little of that waiting for you this holiday.
