Blog #2 Hidcote Harvest and Surprise Visitors

The lavender continues to bloom at Hambly Farms!  The 1,020 Hidcote plants that were put in the ground in early March have given us a late bountiful harvest of beautiful deep purple bouquets.  After harvesting, sorting and bundling, we have an amazing wall of lavender in our barn that is drying and ready to use.  If the weather stays hot, we might also get a crop from the 1000 grosso plants we planted in late May- stay tuned.

The animals at the farm always amaze us.  The goats have figured out how to get out of their pen if the chain is not perfectly latched.  They love to roam around the property and greet new campers- even going inside their trailer if the door is open!  The wildlife in the area also loves to come to the farm.  Milton was harvesting lavender at daylight a couple of weeks ago when he ran out of rubber bands.  As he walked to the barn, he heard something moving in the brush beyond the barn.  What is it?  Coyotes?  Mountain Lion? Deer?  Nope- spike elk!  He was just cruising around looking for food and water.  He looked at Milton for a minute then walked around the farm before wandering down the road.  You never know what is going to surprise you in the mornings at the farm.

In the last month we have had campers from around the world and the United States continue to stay on the farm.  Families from England and Canada stayed with us to enjoy our amazing sunsets.  Besides meeting people from around the world, we also love to hear what people do for a living.  We had a tugboat captain from the Port of Long Beach, a crypto trader and a bail bondsman stay with us.  We love learning about the different careers people have and their experiences in life.  If you do not learn something new every day you are not paying attention or asking the right questions!

Gina had a cool experience last weekend in Morro Bay at the Art in the Park.  She follows the Product Boss podcast.  Jacqueline and Minna coach new businesses on how to be successful and Gina really enjoys listening to them when she is working.  Jacqueline was in Morro Bay with her family and came to shop at the art show.  Gina recognized her across the way and they had a wonderful chat about the podcast and our small business.  Jacqueline said it was the first time she had been noticed in public and she was very excited!  You never know who you are going to see when you are at a show!
